In memory of Commodore Malia…

It was the time of wee hours, the time when, the best ideas are conceived. At a rather spiritual reunion of some of the Commodore’s Boys in Singapore, as dawn approached, and just before the orange started to settle itself on the horizon, a call was taken to have another meeting of souls

Joe Alapat, the most energetic of the lot, offered to organise the same. Not much time later, nineteen of the Commodore’s Boys met for another spiritual weekend reunion off the backwaters of Cochin. The whole hotel had to be booked for these nineteen, as it was too spiritual for mere mortals.

This is where, on the second day, Naren Bhatt proposed that we all needed to give back to society at large, and to start with we should all do something for the families of martyrs of our defence forces personnel.

The best way was, forming a Trust. Someone proposed that it should be named after Naren as it was his idea, but he proposed that it should be named after the man because of whom this band of brothers were sitting together, their beloved and respected, Commodore Malia. The trust was unanimously seconded by all present there. The ball had started rolling and the thought soon became reality.

S.K. Srivastava and Mervyn Martyres did the spade work and many more contributed with time and energy. Thus the Commodore’s Boys Public Charitable Trust, came into being.

Now that the seed is sown, we hope the Trust will grow in strength and diversity, and become a tree that shades those in need. We urge all the Commodore’s Boys to spread the word and make this a platform for like-minded people in the shipping fraternity and beyond, to do good to the society.
